Raw Beets

As you know, I have reviewed the nutritional contents of cantaloupe seeds. Now I would like to review with you the amazing qualities of beets. So let's look at 1 cup of sliced raw beets.

Here is what is in that 136 grams of the humble beet:

   Water: 119.11g               Calories: 58
   Protein: 2.19g               Carbohydrates: 13g
   Fiber: 3.8g                  Sugars: 9.19g
Total Fat: .23g              Saturated Fat: .037g
   Mono-Unsaturated Fat: .045g  Poly-Unsaturated Fat: .083g
   Cholesterol: 0g              Iron: 1.09 mg
Calcium: 22 mg               Magnesium: 31 mg
Phosphorus: 54 mg            Potassium: 442 mg
Sodium: 106 mg               Zinc: .48 mg
   Vitamin C: 6.7 mg            Thiamin: .054 mg
Pantothenic Acid: .211 mg    Vitamin B6: .091 mg
   Folate: 148 mcg              Vitamin A: 45 I.U.
   Vitamin E: .05 mg            Vitamin K: .3 mcg
Phytosterols: 34 mg          beta Carotene: 27 mcg

If you could point to just one of these elements in beets as something NOT good for you, I would love to hear about it. The fact is, raw beets have so much going for it that to not eat them is to 'miss the boat' on foods that heal.

If you grew up thinking that this was a great breakfast item like I was and it was really one of the few choices available growing up, it isn't surprising you may not understand how this food offers little to no nutrition for your body.

That was the case with me. I ate so many of these I never even tasted the solidified lard in it or the grease and oil on the bottom. They taste great but that's where it all ends. The vast majority will end up being rejected by the body and digested to the colon for elimination.

It does not promote health, certainly doesn't sustain health and can induce lethargy. Compare this danish to something that can easily qualify as a super-food:

What you see here in the beet is not food coloring yet it does contain a good amount of natural sugar. But look what else it contains and it takes little imagination to consider what good this can do for your body if only it is eaten.

I can tell you what it's like to be sick and to crave to be healthy. Now I can say, 3 weeks in, beets are one of my "hero foods". That is, I look at beets as a hero to my body and health.

They are incredibly affordable, easily storable and very easy to juice or blend.
